The Stanley Cup in Iqaluit: What You Need to Know


If you haven’t heard already, the Stanley Cup will be making an appearance in Iqaluit tomorrow. To celebrate, the NHLScotiabank, Project North, and First Air  have teamed up to create a hockey tour on Friday, March 27th. The tour will begin in Kuujjuaq, where local fans will have the opportunity to take pictures with the Cup and meet some NHL Alumni. In addition, Scotiabank and Project North will be donating 25 bags of new hockey equipment to Nunavik youth, which will be distributed by First Air.

After its debut visit to Nunavik, the Stanley Cup will continue its way north to Nunavut. This isn't the first time the Cup has visited Iqaluit, but this time, there are even more prizes and opportunities to enjoy hockey in the North.

There are a few confirmed and rumoured events planned for the Stanley Cup in Iqaluit. Here is the Cup's Iqaluit itinerary:

Friday, March 27th

Stanley Cup Viewing
Time: 4:00-6:00 PM
Location: Arctic Winter Games Arena (AWG)
Cost: Free

Festivities will begin with the Stanley Cup public viewing, starting at 4:00pm. This is a great photo opportunity for hockey fans young and old!

VIP Hockey Game
Time: 5:00-6:00 PM
Location: AWG
Cost: $10 donation per person

The VIP hockey game will be coached by NHL alums John LeClair and Marty McSorley. LeClair is a Stanley Cup winner, three-time 50 goal scorer, and former member of the “Legion of Doom” line in Philadelphia. McSorley is a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Edmonton Oilers, and former on-ice bodyguard for Wayne Gretzky. The rosters will consist of local hockey celebrities against the 2015 Avataq Cup winners from Repulse Bay.

Tickets for the game will cost $10, with proceeds supporting two of Iqaluit's local charities: Qayuqtuvik Society and the YWCA.

Saturday, March 28th

NEW: The Stanley Cup will be on display for photos from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the AWG!

Contests: Free Flights and Tickets to an NHL Game!

In honour of this unique celebration of hockey in the North, First Air is hosting a number of different contests via social media.

1. Airfare, hotel, and NHL game for two in Winnipeg

All you have to do to win this prize is share this Facebook post before March 30th! A winner will be selected at random and announced on April 2nd.

2. Airfare, hotel, and NHL game for two in Montreal

Do you love hockey? Comment on this Facebook photo and tell everyone why! The person whose comment receives the most number of likes will automatically win this prize pack. You can enter and vote for your favourite comments until March 30th; winner announced April 2nd.

3. Airfare, hotel, and NHL game for two in Ottawa or Montreal

For this one, First Air is asking fans in Kuujjuaq and Iqaluit to tweet a photo from Friday's events using the hashtag #7Fhockey. Everyone who tweets a photo (and follows First Air on Twitter) will be entered in a draw to win the prize. Super easy and super fun - we can't wait to see your shots with the Stanley Cup in Iqaluit!
